Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, non-invasive manual technique that has a powerful effect on the body. Research in Australia, Europe and North America has proven its efficacy as a stand-alone treatment and in combination with other therapies.
MLD affects the nervous system by lowering sympathetic tonus, as demonstrated by Dr P Hutzschenreuter in Germany. In so doing, MLD can have an effect on smooth muscles innervated by the sympathetic system such as in blood and lymph vessels as well as intestinal motility. It can also help a patient recuperate from chronic illness by allowing their parasympathetic nervous system to predominate. MLD is calming and relaxing to receive and patients often feel a sense of well-being after treatment.
Through the pumping and stretching effect on the lymph vessels, the Dr. Vodder method of Manual Lymph Drainage stimulates the contraction of smooth muscles in lymph vessels, helping to move the lymph forward and drain the connective tissue.
The skin is stretched and torqued in a specific manner, based on scientific, physiological principles that have proven to encourage lymph flow. Fluid movement in the connective tissue (interstitial fluid) as well as the movement of lymph is assisted. When performed correctly with the correct pressure, direction and speed, this can greatly enhance recovery and facilitate drainage. It also has profound effects on the other body systems.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage alleviates pain and removes edema, thereby helping to improve patients’ mobility.

Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is a combination of the Dr. Vodder method of Manual Lymph Drainage, education, remedial exercise, compression bandaging (or garments in the maintenance phase) and therapeutic skin care. Breathing exercises and a healthy diet are also valuable tools for optimal health.
Treatment involves an Initial Phase and a Maintenance Phase for successful, long-term results.
Treatment should start as soon as possible for best results. Some Conditions will require several treatments in close succession.
Wearing compression stockings or garments that are available over the counter may be dangerous if you have a circulatory or lymphatic medical condition. These products may not be appropriate for your medical needs. It's important to wear the most appropriate type of compression garment. Medical-grade compression garments promote circulation, manage edema, and may be necessary to manage your condition effectively.
